    Hi,

can anyone recommend a converter (hopefully freeware!) to turn AVIs and WMVs into something Media Composer (software) can import. A friend’s asked me to figure this out so i don’t know what codecs are underneath the wrappers but I’d bet they’re mpeg of some description.

    Cheers

virtual dub is cheap and easy.
Assuming you already have after effects, that’ll work just fine.

I recently got a WMV file I had to use.
If you’re on a Windows box, you can use Windows Movie Maker to do the job.
    What worked for me:
Open the WMV in Windows Movie Maker, drop in timeline. “Save Movie file” and “My Computer” as Movie Location to save to. Next, for “Movie Settings” select “Other Settings” and from the pulldown choose “DV-AVI(NTSC)”
Avid MC was OK with the AVI and I was able to incorporate it into the project (looked awful to start with, looked no less awful to end with. G-I-G-O).
