XPress Pro P2 media severe sound problems
Need help — overmodulated audio making me crazy!
I am working on the new Xpress Pro 5.8.0 Have been editing a job shot on P2.
Right off the bat, I spent 20 mins on the phone with tech support to learn that the
FILE -> IMPORT P2 option doesn’t work in the current xpress pro version (5.8)… ughInstead (per avid tech support’s suggestion) I created folders by hand:
Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1/ then /2/ etc for each P2 folder and manually moved all the AUDIO
and VIDEO in
Then I used Media Tool to get all of the MXF files into Avid.It worked fine — all of the audio tracks paired correctly with picture and it is running fast and smooth BUT
SOME of the audio is peaking and distorted and completely unusable.
I did a test with the same clips in Final Cut and they were fine, so I know the media is not the issue.
Most of the material is fine, but random long chunks of media have really serious audio distortion.
I am far enough into this job that I cannot switch over to Final Cut.
Because I can’t take advantage of FILE-> IMPORT P2 I don’t have any import settings to tweak.Any ideas? What can I do?

Avids have always imported cd audio hot. It’s not unusable, you just have to bring it down-14 per clip. Not sure why they never felt a need to address this.
If thats not what it was, adrenaline has a bug where it likes to capture worthless audio from time to time. It’s bagged me before when a client pops in to lay down a quick vo or somthing. I have learned to check EVERY clip before letting them leave.

Thank you so much for the response.
The tricky thing with these clips is that it is not really an *import* — they are native MXF from the P2 card.The “Import from P2” function doesn’t work so I am forced to manually bring the media files into the Avid MediaFiles folders. The Avid sees them, synchs them up — and plays them all distorted and terrible. Even if I bring the audio way way down it’s still totally distorted — unusable audio.
The same audio clips come into Final Cut perfectly so I know it’s not a media problem. I just need the Avid to be forced to interpret them as media from a P2… There must be some automatic adjustment that the Avid should be making but isn’t.
Any ideas?

man, it’s hard to say, not being able to see and hear. Have you tried chaging sample rates? Just wondering is one clip is making things fussy.
