I posted this over on the G-Tech forum, but figures I would try here as well, as I haven’t gotten any bites over there.

I was wondering, is there a performance advantage of getting two G-SATA or G-RAID2 arrays with a 500GB capacity and striping them together, or would it be the same as getting one 1TB array? I use both FCP and Avid, but read somewhere that Avid prefers multiple smaller drives over fewer large drives.

Also, it seems to me that price and performance are almost identical between the G-RAID2 and G-SATA based on the G-Tech website (you basically get 1 more stream of RT for a given resolution). What would be the advantage of getting the G-RAID2 when the G-SATA gives you slightly better performance for the same price?

    Thanks.

If you go with two 500GB drives you can RAID them together and that should give you better performance. Regarding the Avid prefering smaller drives–depends on if you’re working in OMF or MXF media and may depend on whether you’re using Windows or OS X.

OMF files all go into one folder–OMFI MediaFiles. When you get close to 10,000 in windows things start freaking out, and if you have more than 10,000 files windows will start to ignore files. However, if you’re working with MXF media your Avid will start making subfolders as the file count get higher, making the number of files a non-issue. Whether Macs handle these file limitations differently I have no idea. Either way, you’ll probably want to partition your 2 x 500GB drives or 1TB drive into several sections–maybe 250GB partitions.

As to your questions about GRAID or GSATA, I have no idea. I’m not familiar with them.

I will be working in MXF, so it sounds like it should be a non-issue, then. You are saying, though, that even if I go with two 500GB drives striped together, I should partition them as four 250GB partitions? Is this correct even if I’m working with MXF?
