  • Media Composer Reference Movie?

Greetings. We’re switching from FCP to Composer at the school where I teach, and I’m wondering if there is something comparable to an FCP reference movie in Composer. I was a little chagrined when I imported a QT clip into Composer and saw it had to convert to MXF. MFX files don’t seem to open in QT-compliant apps like After Effects, Compressor, etc. I’m used to using an FCP reference movie for such things, but haven’t found anything similar in Composer. Do I actually have to render out to an intermediate codec to go to, say After Effects?

    Thanks.

If After Effects or Compressor or any other program you’re wanting to take a Quicktime Reference to is installed on the same system as your Media Composer, or is sharing the same storage, you can export a quicktime reference.

Select the clip or sequence you want to export, go to File–Export. In your export settings choose Quicktime Reference. You can click the Options button to choose whether it exports between In and Outs or the entire clip/sequence regardless of In/Outs. It will reference the original OMF or MXF media but be wrapped in a Quicktime format.

There is no way AVID can play back a reference movie.
All that it plays back MUST be in a correct format and reside in the avid mediafolders.
You can speed up things by rendering your qt assets to the desired avid codec, so you get a ‘fast import’, meaning it only copies the file instead of transcoding.
But it will copy or transcode, always.
