I have a graphic Id like to Matte, but want to keep the black in the image.

How can I create a matte file for it? Do I need to render an alpha channe onlyl, separatly and use that in After Effects, or can I create it in Avid?

Your best bet is to open the graphic in Photoshop. Create a new file of the correct size on a transparent background, cut and paste yoru graphic in and save as a .png. Keep in mind you may need to clean up the back logo, etc.

Import it into Avid, and viola’! A graphic with an alpha (or matte if you prefer) to do with as you wish.
