I have been authering DVDs for a post facility that edits on Avids. They output to tape and then I ingest them into my Final Cut Studio System for minor alterations and then encoding and DVD authoring. The post house is looking for a easier way to get me the material. So my question is: what are the output options from the Avid? I think they have media composers. Can they just output an .avi or .dv file to a hard drive? Any input would be great.

    Thanks,
    Glenn

They can output QT in any form, but be aware that color levels will be tricky.
Also, if they mix different codecs in the timeline, there is a posibillity that there are different field dominances in the file. Avid does not care and corrects it on the fly, but for you it will be horror to deal with.
Next, if you are in NTSC, and if they work in something else as DV (they should), it is better NOT to go trough the DV codec if you got to MpegII, as the 4:1:1 -> 4:2:0 conversion will make the end result horrible.

Whatever you do, test, test, test.

imo, they are already doing it the easiest way by outputting to tape and just handing that to ya.
Taking the time to make, export and import files will take longer than just spittin ou to tape.
