  • Importing photos into a 16:9 sequence

I have been trying to import some photos into a 16:9 sequence and they keep looking
stretched. I looked up the parameters on Avid.com and am told that my image should be put on a 720 x540 pixel document and imported 601 square. I also tried setting my pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop to D1/ DV Widescreen and it still comes out looking wrong.
I think I’m following the directions exactly but I must be missing something. Thanks
    for the help.

720×540 is 4×3 using square pixels. If I remember correctly, 856 X 480 is widescreen 16×9 using square pixels.
Creating your graphics in Photoshop using the NTSC widescreen settings should create a 720×480 image with 1.9 pixel aspect. You’d want to import it into Avid as 601 non-square.

I usually keep the height consistent, thereby using 720×540 for 4×3 and 960×540 for 16×9.

Also if you’re ever confused about maintaining correct shapes, remember that true 16×9 HD is 1920×1080. Create a blank new image in Photoshop with these dimensions and do an “Image/Resize” while keeping “Constrain Proportions” on. This way you can type whatever size you want into the height and the width will automatically snap to the right number that maintains the 16×9 shape. (it also works for 4×3 and PAL sizing.)

I have issues with this as well. When importing into a 4:3 sequence, checking “maintain and resize” results in proper aspect ratio. But maintain and resize doesn’t seem to work for 16:9 projects.

Thanks for the tips but I’m still not getting it. Now, I’m getting a message when I import
that says “the import could not be completed because the resulting file exceeds the maximum supported file size. ” I’ve got my photos at 72 dpi and am using the 853 x 486 pixel size, although I had tried the 1920 x 1080 and 960 x 540 as well. I’ve flattened the layers and made it a tiff and it says it is 1.3MB.

You’ll find sometimes that Avid errors don’t actually correspond to the actual cause of the error. Check your tif files, tif files can be CYMK as well as RGB, you need RGB. Also, tif files support compression, you might see if not using compression is an option when creating the file. If all else fails, try creating a PNG or Photoshop PSD.

Seems as if the Avid was just being buggy. Photos that I had successfully imported before
wouldn’t import when I tried. But now after having the weekend off, the machine seems fine. And the dimensions that I got here worked. Thanks.
