    hey guys

I was wondrig if there is anypoint of making Master on Beta tape of a film that was shots on DV?
I just finished working on a project that was completely shot on DVcam and now its time for the Matser tapes, I know that some festivals ask specificly for Beta format, but other than that, is there a point in general of making a master on Beta?

Its still a widely accepted format – even though Sony stopped manufacturing BetaSP decks (I think all of the new J decks support SP, though).

The point, I would think, is making a master on whatever format your outlet asks for.

keep in mind that you actually lose quality doing this. Going from DV back to DV remains a clone. Going to an analog forma steps down a generation.
That said, ya gotta give em whats requested.

Gonna step on Grinner just a little here. If you capture DV via firewire, and make a cuts only edit, and then output via firewire, he is technically correct. However, if you do ANYTHING to that timeline that requires rendering (motion effects, dissolves, color correction, etc.) you are going down generations in the low res DV quality codec.

On the other hand, a first generation beta SP tape, recorded on a well maintained deck (analog heads wear out and get worse with age), in componenet mode, will be of better quality than a DV recorded tape.

That said, you will probably never see a difference on a component monitor between the two.

PS: I can tell as the beta SP will actually be sharper than the DV as it maintains the high frequencies better. Just look at the hair on a person and you will see what I mean.

Come on Terrence, ever watched a colored title rendered in DV?
Ever turned on ‘blue only’ on DV?
Ever saw heavilly color corrected DV material

(and i know you have to say yes to all…)

Good beta (and that aint UVW) can look gorgeous, bad beta can look horrible, but there is definitly a difference. IMHO, if you work with DV, ingest uncompressed, work uncompressed and only write back to DV if you have too. (but i have the luxury of digibeta, and i can imagine people prefer dvCam over UVW…)

    Bouke,

You I think you are agreeing with me that Beta SP is better. My point is that the average viewer will not seee the difference.
