We are about to shoot our first real HD project with our HVX-200s and I was curious what HD recording settings people are using that work well with Media Composer Adrenaline 2.6.2. I will probably catch guff for this, but management wants it shot in HD so we can show off. Then we will downcovert to SD for broadcast. I would like to use 24fps in either 720P Native or 1080I Advanced, but I am having trouble discovering if I can downconvert the project to 480i without any issues. Or would it be more of an advantage to downconvert in the camera first? Anyone out there do anything remotely close to this?

You can work in 720p/24pN on the camera in a 720p/23.976 project on Avid. If you have a DNxcel board (the HD card) you can transcode to DNxHD and have both an HD and SD output at the same time.

If you don’t have a card, edit at HD, because you can, then transcode the finished piece to SD for output. If DVD, output a QT ref from your HD project and encode directly to SD MPEG2.

We do have the DNxcel board. I see. Transcode from DVC-Pro HD to DNxHD. Our final delivery method will be a firewire digital cut to the DVC-Pro 25 SD93 deck. I can output a 24p project to that?

Yes you can – just to be clear, a 23.976 project. Choose SD down convert in the Video OUtput tool then the HD TAB. Select anamorphic, letterbox, or center crop depending on your needs.
