  Avid vs. Adobe, I’m about to spend a lot of money on one of them…which one?

  I have been editing with Adobe Premiere Pro since before it was “Pro” and am currently editing with the entire Adobe Production Studio Pro. I’ve always liked Premiere and it’s served me pretty well. In about 1 month construction will begin on my new offices which will include a studio, editing suites, conference room, etc. In the process I’ll be upgrading my main editing equipment and going from mainly SD to SD and HD with most of the HD sources coming from the HVX 200. I’ll also have a deck to edit HDCAM but I don’t own a 900, I just rent it from time to time.

  Matrox makes seemingly great hardware with their Axio system that uses Adobe software. If I buy their LE hardware, and an HP workstation, It looks like it will cost anywhere from about $12,000 to $20,000 for the editing system depending on peripherals.

  Long ago, the first NLE I ever cut on was an Avid, but it’s been years. I’ve always thought that when I got to a higher level with my business then I may toy with the idea of moving to Avid if it made sense. Now that the Axio is on the market, I’m not sure.

  Finally, let me tell you the kind of work I do so you can have a better idea of the hardware I would need. I do corporate video, TV commercials, and short films. The short “films” are shot on HD video and until now I’ve down converted to edit on my SD system.

  So here are my questions:

  1. Are there any Avid editors out there that have spent significant time on a PPro machine that can compare the two and tell me why they settled with Avid?

  2. What kind of a system can I get into for $12,000 – $20,000?

  3. If I want to edit HD for corporate videos, TV commercials and shorts, which Avid system should I look at, and will I need to go above $20,000?

  4. Because I’ll mainly use the HVX200, I’m assuming that the ability to cut uncompressed 10bit HD is not that important since the DVCPRO HD on P2 cards is compressed. Is that true?
