Currently I’m in the process of purchasing an AVID Xpress Pro Studio Essential.
For the past 4-years I’ve been using FCP with the KONA2 and want to get back into the AVID.
Worked on earlier versions of Media Composer and a little Avid Xpress DV.
Going with an HP, XP 32bit, 3.2 Dual Processor, Nvidia Quadra 1400, 4gigs of RAM & 500gig SATA Drive.
Planning to edit in SD (dv through Digibeta quality) and HD (HDV, DVCPROHD and other compressed formats)

    So…here’s my questions.

    1) Any major difference in features between the Xpress Pro and the Media Composer?
Are they pretty much the same?

    2) What hardware configuration should I look out for? What 3rd party software could cause conflicts?

    3) Besides the MOJO being an I/O, does it truly add value in performance? Planning on purchasing this a little later.

    4) Any other recommendations?

Thank you for your time and professional advise

[marcus] “1) Any major difference in features between the Xpress Pro and the Media Composer?

Animatte and 9 streams of multicam instead of 4 come to mind… If all you are doing is cuts and simple FX, XPress should do the trick.

Mojo actually takes over a lot of the heavy lifting in the video processing department. If you can afford it now, do it.

    [marcus] “4) Any other recommendations?”

Buy from an Avid authorized reseller. Unless you have extensive knowledge on deep-level troubleshooting, building your own system can cause major headaches. There are those smarter than I who’ve done it, and it is certainly possible to do. I have better things to do than tweak OS and hardware issues. A reseller will set it up, and guarantee the machine will work. It will cost more in the short term, but at the end of the day, you’ll be glad you did.

    HTH,

MOJO will give you RT firewire output to a client monitor.
