  Avid Xpress 6.0 and Compaq 8000…change?

  I am starting a series of projects on an Avid Xpress that was hot stuff in 2000, but is hobbling along by current standards. It is the standard issue Compaq EVO W8000, with a single CPU, 1GB RAM, Pioneer A04, SCSI media drives, Meridien, Xpress 6.0, Windows 2000 Pro SP3. I would like to be able to recommend a couple of upgrade paths to the system owner. Here is where the qualified system adherents will start to howl; I am considering a different computer as one option. It would no longer be a qualified system, but it would surely render faster and offer many other speed benefits. Also could very likely use an SATAII RAID. Anyone out there have experience with this (heretical) path?

  More on the Avid straight and narrow, the announcements from NAB about SDI Mojo and software MC look promising. I wonder if HP workstations will be the only computer hardware choice for that combo. I would much rather build my own workstation according to Avid specs, as opposed to buying something off the shelf. As good as the HP workstations are, there is a pretty big price/performance sweetspot there that Avid can take advantage of if they would just publish some approved hardware specs. After all, isn’t this software Media Composer release designed to allow Avid to be MORE competitive (ignoring the rather high price for the software, of course)?
