  AVID TECH SUPPORT CANNOT SOLVE: 1801 PCIP ROM SHADOWING ERROR

  Please help:

  After consulting Avid Tech support (machine under support contract),
  I learned that it was possible to install the supported nVidia 750XGL
  AGP board in our systems.

  Well, that has been easier said than done.

  After many many attempts and lots of time on phone Support,
  we still have the 1801 ROM SHADOWING ERROR.

  System Specs:
  IBM Intellistation Z-Pro 933mhzP3
  1gig RAM
  Meridian III board set

  This is the procedure I followed that took Avid Tech support
  almost 2 months to generate.

  1. Uninstall the secondary EDC monitor from the device manager.
  *Right Click on the Desktop and choose Properties
  *select the “settings” tab, and highlight the #2 monitor.
  *Right click on the #2 monitor and choose Properties.
  *in the properties window choose Adapter, then hit the properties button.
  *in the next window choose the “driver” tab and hit the uninstall button.
  *Once the device is uninstalled Shut down the computer.

  2. Power up the system, Hit F1 to enter the bios.
  *select Devices & I/O Ports & set the following
  *Select Active Video – PCI
  *Palatte snooping – Disabled
  *Video Interupt – Enabled
  -Hit [ESC] to get back to the main bios screen
  *select Advanced Setup
  *select Rom Shadowing

  There are 9 ranges shown, ranging E0000 through C0000
  Set the following 6 ranges to disabled:

  dc000
  d8000
  d4000
  d0000
  cc000
  c8000

  IF ALL OF THESE RANGES ARE NOT USER-SELECTABLE – CONFIRM THAT THE AGP
  CARD IS NOT IN THE SYSTEM

  *Hit [ESC] to get back to the main bios screen, save the bios settings.
  *Boot Win2k & confirm operation of the EDC for video punch through.

  3. shut down the system, & install your AGP video card
  *power up the system, Hit F1 to enter the bios.
  *select Devices & I/O Ports & set the following
  *Select Active Video – AGP
  *Hit [ESC] to get back to the main bios screen, save the bios settings.

  THIS IS WHERE THINGS GO WRONG

  4.Install the Nvidia Drivers from C:\Program Files\Avid\Utilities\nVidia Quadro4
  *double click on “setup” and follow the installers instructions.
  install with default configuration.
  *Re-Boot the system after installation is complete.

  Once the AGP card is put into place and you select it as the Active Video card,
  the ROM shadowing settings automatically go back to the way they were and the
  fun little error returns.

  I hope I’ve included enough data so that someone, anyone! can help.
  I convinced my company (Henry’s Motor Company if you know what I mean),
  to drop the $$$$ to make this purchase so I can at least attempt to use
  Marquee. Now, my hind end is in the ringer.

  I am not clear as to what you are trying to do. You have a Meridian based AVID, and you UNINSTALLED the EDC card ? Please tell me that I am mis-interpreting what you said, becuase there is NO WAY to operate a Meridian card set without the EDC (Number Nine) card. No one at AVID told you that you could do so.

  Henry’s automobile company has a large corporate video department that can surely go to the next generation of AVID’s (Meridians) without re-inventing the wheel. I understand the situation you are in, but why did you “upgrade” the graphics card – and PLEASE tell me that I have misread your post, and you did not UNINSTALL the EDC.

  Yeah, not really clear from the post. But basically you should be using BOTH the EDC and the n750XGL. One drives the bin monitor and gives you the OGL acceleration on that screen for Marquee and such. The other takes care of the edit monitor and overlay.

  Thanks for the responses and I’m sorry that perhaps my original post was a too vague for you to understand the scope of our dilemma. So… from the TOP:

  We have Meridian Systems that were purchased before Marquee was available.
  Our machines were never equipped with an AGP video board.
  So, no OPEN GL = no Marquee (animation anyway)

  The upgrade we intended was to install the NVidia 750XGL board that
  Avid told us is the only supported AGP video board for these IBM Intellistations.

  So far, we have been unsuccessful in any of our attempts to get the machines to operate normally with the Nvidia board in place.

  At this point we think that it’s a hardware conflict.
  These machines have the Number Nine Technology Revolution 4 EDC boards.
  These boards are Dual (VGA) head units and to the best of my knowledge,
  there is where our problem lies. In order to have normal EDIT operation,
  you must use the “EDIT” side(vga) of the EDC. However, I cannot
  get the machine to boot without a monitor connected to the “BIN” side of the EDC.

  The only configuration that sort of works, is having a Monitor on the BIN OR BOOT
  side of the EDC and one connected to the NVIDIA. This severely hinders AVID
  performance but allows me to use the Nvidia’s OpenGL for Marquee.
  However, even with this config I get the 1801 PCI/PNP ROM Shadowing ERROR.

  Also, it appears that the ROM Shadowing settings within the BIOS are somehow defaulting
  to a non supported configuration once the AGP card is selected as ACTIVE VIDEO within BIOS.

  I have a feeling, now that it has been 3 months since we began this process, Avid may
  be ready to wave the white flag.

  I hope this is enough information. If you can help, please do.
