  HDV to DV Xpress to TGA/TIFF to 35mm: No recompression?

  Hello,

  For a feature film we are shooting with dual Canon XLH1, final release on 35mm theatrical print. We want to load HDV material (without conversion or lossy compression) into Avid Xpress, cut the film and then export a High Definiton TIFF/TGA sequence to the lab for color correction, graphics and fx.

  Question: Does the Avid system change or recompress the MPEG files in such a way that there is lossy compression that will affect the files when we export them to uncompressed HD 1920×1080? We are of course NOT adding any FX or transitions to the clips before exporting, a cuts-only sequence.

  I know HDV into Final Cut and then to uncompressed HD is pretty much a breeze, and I have done 35mm transfer tests with the Canon against the Panasonic AG-HVX200 with no hiccups and great picture quality (The Canon won, hands down!). Problem is no-one I have asked knows (or will tell) if the Avid handling of HDV involves recompression or not. I always get a vague answer that the (lossy) DNX codec has great picture quality. Which of course involves an expensive upgrade and is not the answer we are looking for.

  What’s the real story here?
