Exporting from Avid Xpress
Yesterday I got myself ready to export a 50-minute documentary I am working on.
As this was my first time doing this, I was surprised that there was a 2GB limit for avi files. That limit got me only about 6 minutes of it, so I should need about 8 times more. HD space I have plenty of, so that is not a problem.
Which is the best way to export this project then, and the maximum quality I can get?
I already did a video mixdown and an audio mixdown, but I get omf files that I can’t use on the programs I will use for my DVD. Is there a way to convert them?
What are the options I have?

https://www.videoguys.com/XDVtips.html#squeezeFirst, you’ll want to export a QT reference out of the Avid. Since Sorenson Squeeze is bundled with (most) Avid software, it’s easiest to use it. the 2gb .avi issue is an OS thing, not Avid; regardless, Avid has never been good at exporting anything other than same as source stuff. Using a third party encoder gives you the most control. Do a search on ‘export settings’ in the COW should give you a plethora of information on the subject.

What is that Sorenson Squeeze? Are you sure it’s always bundled or is it a plug-in? Where do I get it? What should I use it for?
It doesn’t seem to be on my version (#5) or on my setup. On the Videoguys’ tips they say it should be in the Autolaunch pag, but it’s not on mine: only PowerDVD is the option I have.
What I did was export my files as a QT Reference and then loaded the mov file on Canopus, which converted it onto mpeg2.
But I am getting some strobo aberrations in movements and pans which are not on the originals, not even on the m2v file Canopus created. So I guess it migh be something in the vob conversion which is causing it. I used TMPGEnc DVD Author for that, and it always worked fine. Also I did burn a test using the avi conversion (limited to 2GB) that Avid exported, and it looked fine. What might be happening?

You may hear different opinions about this. But what I have to do to get QT ref movies to work properly is an audio and video mixdown, so that no gaps, overlays, or filler/black remain on timeline. Then make your ref mov. This has worked well using Adobe Encore.
