  • Adjusting Video Input Level

In my old Avid Express, I could turn on the media input tool and adjust my levels coming in. Is there a way to do this on Express DV? All of my video comes in a little too hot and blown out. Then, wehn I export it as a quicktime, it becomes even hotter. I see the color adjust settings but they cannot fix viedo that is too hot that is already on the hard drive that way.

You cant adjust DV levels like you could with analog. Its a straight file transfer from the tape to the hard drive.

You don’t have the input level controls like to do on Media Composer or higher systems. I use a cheap TBC to set input levels & clean up the signal before digitizing.

It shouldn’t be that it is a straight input because the level isn’t nearly that bright on the actual tape.

If you are going in via firewire, it is a straight data transfer. There are no levels to set. If the image appears different, you have something wrong with your cabling, monitoring or some other area of your system.

This does not apply to analog or SDI outputs which ARE adjustable.

This seems like a very good question, so please excuse my widening the field.

That adjusting is something I always found like a very good idea, both to set audio and video levels.

Which is the TBC or amplifier any of you might be using for this? How do you set the levels (VU, scope)? Which should be the “right” way to do it?
