Mixed Film Gauge Workflow Methods
Hi folks,
More questions with respect to Avid projects using mixed film gauges. This is becoming more and more of the norm here at PostWorks, as our usual load of feature film clients just doing editorial is turning into feature film clients staying at PostWorks to do 2K-based DI finishing. Thus list management is Key – no pun intended – from start to finish.
Several features here are shooting on 3perf as a 2K DI finish is planned, though also have 4perf footage usually because visual FX are planned (larger palette for creating background plates). Tracking 3perf Keycode and 4perf Keycode is not hard, simply by changing the Keycode heading within ALE to Ink. However when it comes to pulling lists, what are people doing to make this easier? As best as I know, you can only pull Filmscribe lists using one counting method at a time.
One thing I’ve suggested to film assistants is to color-code the minority clips – i.e. 4perf clips are in the minority, and thus color code them yellow for example – and then when reels are picture locked, push those clips onto V2, leaving the majority clips on V1. When pulling lists in Filmscribe, you simply change the Video track selection and the “Using” setting under Global to reflect these two different methods of couting. That’s what I’ve recommended so far and it seems to work.
Are there other or better ways to approach this? What else do folks out there tell their clients when it comes to these mixed film guages? Also, will the new versions of Adrenaline that allow for mixed film gauges simplify this process?
Thanks everyone,
Matt
