getting video from a dvd, into avid
what is the best way to rip video from a dvd, to a format I can suck into avid, like avi or mov…I have used dvd decrypter to make the video an mpeg, but i don’t have anything that will convert an mpeg to an avi or mov. Or, is there an easier way to do it than dvd decrypter. I just want bring a film into my avid and reedit it just for fun, so I also want as high as quality as i can possibly get, nothing than converts the mpeg video to anything worse than it already is. if anyone has a solution, i would greatly appreciate it.

I just run it from my dvd player though my mojo and into my avid. Before my mojo I ran it though my deck and into the avid. That’s the easiest way.

If you’re not running through a Mojo, you can use any old-school TBC. DVD player>TBC>Avid’s composite input. Voila!

doesn’t that do a dv compression when doing an analog to digital conversion. I was hoping to hear of a way where i could take the native mpeg from the disc, without losing any more than it already has, and convert it into something avid would accept

For Mac OS X:
I highly recommend Cinematize 2 from Miraizon. (.com)
With this program it couldn’t be easier:
put dvd in your drive and launch Cinematize, select the VTS you want to extract – or mark in and out around the specific area, select the Quicktime codec you want to use from all codecs on your system – straight to Avid 2:1 if that’s what you like, and it’ll quickly spit out a quicktime file you can quick import into your Avid for editing.
Of course, it will only do discs without copy-protection, so make sure you didn’t build your dvd with CSS or Macrovision and you’re a go.For PC:
try google for DVD rip and I’m sure you’ll find hundreds of programs that’ll do it. -
i tried to do the same thing. dvd decryptor, then a program called dvd to avi. that worked turning the vob file to avi. then, went to import the avi, and after over 12 hours overnight, only 30 percent of the movie got in. i busted it and did composite out.
someone has got to come up with a good way (and not a hack!) to do this like cd’s. yes, we shouldn’t do this with hollywood blockbusters, but more and more footage and finished programs are coming in this way. the cd import is so easy and clean, why can’t it just be this way for dvd. there is certainly the demand for it.
