Xpress Pro Codecs on Mac
Posted by Enzo Tedeschi on August 7, 2005 at 7:52 amHere’s one:
If I buy and install Xpress Pro HD on my Mac, can I then use Xpress Pro HD to cut SD media consolidated over onto a portable from a MC Adrenaline digitised at 2:1?

August 7, 2005 at 12:17 pmFirst off all there is no Xpress Pro HD for the Mac, it currently exists for the PC only. The Mac version will be for an future release.
Secondly, Xpress Pro HD does not support 2:1 SD resolution, on Mac or PC. Check out the Avid Xpress Pro product pages at http://www.avid.com for detailed specification of supported resolutions.

This is the source of my confusion – slightly silly to publish system specs against an OS that isn’t supported, for starters…
I’m aware of the official line from Avid, I also know that it wouldn’t be the first time that users have found a workaround for something.
Thanks.

August 7, 2005 at 3:22 pmIt is a bit confusing at the start, but if you read the Mac requirements at the bottom of the page it does state that it will be supported in a future release. The problem is that the link takes you to another page meant for Xpress Pro.
As far as workarounds, if the 2:1 was on an Adrenaline based system, you could always transcode to an Xpress Pro compatible resolution. And by the way, I am the king of workaorunds… Do you know how to get two rows of buttons in Xpess Pro?

August 7, 2005 at 6:24 pmGo to any Media Composer Meridian or Adrenaline and save out the composer settings with 2 rows of buttons.. transfer those settings to Xpress Pro and open them – make it the active setting and voil

Add this jewel to your crown (or should I challenge you for the title of “King”?). I did this with XpressDV 3.5 and early (4, 4.1) versions of XpressPro. I am not sure it it still works, but I’ll bet it does.
Open a bin in a project. In Windows, open the folder that contains the 2:1 media. Drag all the 2:1 media into the bin at once and it will transcode it and resolve the media into the proper clips. I don’t recall if it asks what resolution to transcode to or you have to set it in the project, but I have done this drag and drop transcode to DV25, 15:1 and 1:1. With a little relinking magic, your project is back where you were on Adrenaline.
If you try this with the import dialog, it won’t work. But the above hack does.

August 9, 2005 at 12:47 amAha!. Now that you bring it up, I now remember this feature was added a couple of versions ago. This allows Xppro Users to not be caught without the ability to do somethig with the media. Thanks for reminding me!

August 11, 2005 at 3:57 amHi Michael,
I must be confused. I D/L the linked file and tried following the instrutions, but no joy. When I open the settings pane and go to open settings file. navigate to the .avs file I D/L and open it. I get an empty settings window with the name of the file in the title bar. Am I doing something wrong? I’m on Mac OSX 10.3.9 running AXP 4.6.5 Thanks for your help.
