    Hi All,

We received the first of four Avid Newscutter with Adrenaline systems and I have a question regarding comm ports on the HP XW8200 workstation.

This particular Avid system replaces a stand alone Sony DNE2000 editing system that had a controller wheel. The folks that edit on the replacement Avid would like one as well. The wheel takes a serial port on the workstation, and so does deck control. The HP has only one comm port showing, and all the literature indicates thats it! However, I thought there may be another port on the motherboard which I could bring out to the backplane with a cable and connector assembly. Off hand, does anyone happen to know if there is, in fact, another serial port on that motherboard? I am hesitant to take the workstation out of service for a look-see if I can help it, since the editors are using it pretty much all the time.

Having said that, if there is no other serial port available, does anyone have any experience with add-on serial port cards? It seems to me that the resources in that workstation are pretty much taken up, and I don’t know what adding another PCI card would do.

Finally, does anyone have suggestions as to brand of wheel. Any and all help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Danny Biando

    Danny,

There are a number of USB to RS232 adapters on the market. That might be the easiest solution.
