FCP to Avid switch (newby question)
Morning all,
with Avid dropping right down in price (especially as I work in education), I thought now would be a good time to add it to my skillset and so wanted to ask a couple of questions.
Firstly, the product line is simpler but still as confusing as ever! I don’t need SDI at the minute, so was going to just buy the software version of Media Composer. Is version 3.x the right one to buy?
Secondly, are there are any (i.e. how many?!) issues are there with it running on a mac that also has FCP running? Any issues with graphics cards etc? I’m running a mac pro (2.66 GHz dual Xeon, 4GB ram, Radeon X1900XT on 10.5.4.Thanks, any advice greatly appreciated!

The biggest issues I’ve heard of are your OS, Quicktime version and video cards. The requirements are here:

given how often Apple update Quicktime, it’s no surprise there might be conflict there. So I guess the second question is – how specific is the graphics card? Is Avid *that* fussy? Seeing as I bought the dog’s balls of cards at the time, I’d like to think that it isn’t totally out of date after 13 months!!
Any success or nightmares using Radeon X1900 cards out there?Cheers all

Well, I’m not sure ‘fussy’ gives the proper nuance. Avid certifies certain cards to reduce the tech support nightmare. I wouldn’t characterize your card as out of date – just not on the Avid list. Will it work? Probably. Will it work flawlessly? I’m not so sure. There have been people who run XPress on a Windows XP Media Center OS (definitely NOT a certified OS) for months without any problems, then BAM – it stops working.
Hopefully a Mac user will chime in on this….
