  Hardware: capture to external USB/Firewire drives?

  I have a PC that used to house a BlackMagic card we used to capture uncompressed HD.. We stopped using it for that and pulled the card out, but kept the 4 SATA 250G array and installed the Avid Media Composer software.. We now use it as an Avid editing box..

  I was wondering: with external usb/firewire drives being so cheap, could I use that to capture/edit/playback footage? We are only capturing through a Mojo right now, which is firewire.. I can get a 1T external drive for like $300, it would be very beneficial for me to pick up three or four of them and just pull out that 1T array I have in the systen now..

  Ok to use USB/Firewire external drives?

  Firewire – yes. As long as the buss the Mojo is using is seperate from the buss you’ve got your drives plugged into, you should be OK.

  I’ve not had good luck with USB. The data rate is not enough to sustain anything other than 15:1… (at least in my experience..)
