I’m trying to capture some 720p DVCProHD footage from a Pansonic AJ-HD1200A deck with the firewire card installed. I’m capturing via firewire to my notebook computer running the media composer software. I can control the deck fine (although I can’t see a video preview?). Once I start capturing, I keep getting the error “Exception: Audio/Video is unexpectedly no longer coming into the system”. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need more free space on my hard drive? I only have about 5G free, just running a test to make sure this works for our workflow (Avid on PC notebook capturing DVCPro footage, composite in combustion, output to Avid Symphony on MAC).

[-Matthew]”Exception: Audio/Video is unexpectedly no longer coming into the system”.

The message means exactly as it says – there is no video/audio on the firewire input.

The 1200A 60 deck is directly supported in MC 2.7.

    1. Double check the settings on the deck are correct – can you monitor video from the deck itself via a monitor?

    2. Is the deck set for playback via firewire/iLink?

    3. Try setting deck preferences in Media Composer to Generic DV Device

    4. Do you have any other firewire device connected to the same card? Storage etc?

    5. Try pressing play on the VTR and see if that appears within the capture tool window.

    6. Do you have the capture tool set for VTR control? If so try the global setting and press play from the deck when have started a manual record.

    7. In the capture tool, do you have HOST – 1394 set for both video and audio?

Let us know and we should be able to help further.

I hate to admit, but it was not hooked up to a monitor, only my notebook computer via firewire. I’ll check that tomorrow.

    2. Is the deck set for playback via firewire/iLink?

    Yes.

    3. Try setting deck preferences in Media Composer to Generic DV Device

Originally it was set to Generic DV Device. That allowed me to control the deck fine, although sometimes the preroll would hang. I switched the input device to match the deck, and everything worked fine (except for the above error).

    4. Do you have any other firewire device connected to the same card? Storage etc?

    No, just the deck.

    5. Try pressing play on the VTR and see if that appears within the capture tool window.

It does. In fact, if the deck is already rolling the capture tool window shows it’s playing and matches it’s timecode.

    6. Do you have the capture tool set for VTR control? If so try the global setting and press play from the deck when have started a manual record.

I assume the capture tool is set for VTR control. As I said, I have no problems controlling the deck or setting ins/outs. Once I press the red capture button, it prerolls the tape, starts to capture (I see my hard drive light blinking) but at the end of the capture it give me the error.

    7. In the capture tool, do you have HOST – 1394 set for both video and audio?

Yes, they are both on 1394.

Let us know and we should be able to help further.

    Thanks for the advice!

I’ve tried changing the settings of the IEEE output on the deck to 200Mbps and 100Mbs from the original 400Mbs, but still no-go.

I’m using a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable (notebook computer has 4 pin port), could that be it? I wouldn’t think so, but I can’t think of anything else..

    Getting closer!

    1. Do you timecode breaks on your tape at around the time of failure?
    2. Are you capturing to the correct drive in the capture tool?
    3. Have a check of the following document on page 4 that refers to your deck and check settings. Device Compatability.

Another thing to check is your drive compatibility – are your drives spinning fast enough? Unless your drive are going 10k rpm, it probably can’t keep up with the data thrown at it.

And I remember when streaming data at 33 1/3 rpm was cool… Of course you had to have a penny on the drive head to make it work, but I digress…
