  please help me set up my avid editing system at home

  hi friends,
  i am planning to set up my little avid editing studio…I just wanna capture footage from my mini Dv camera. sony Hc 90 e.

  please let me know answers for following

  1. How to capture footage from sony mini dv to Avid.

  I live in a small town n i came across snazzi bridge 2 av dv card. will it work with avid.I mailed them but they dint reply.

  2. I called up the people who sell avid n they said all i need is a Ads pyro card and fire wire .

  Avid recommonds this but the Ads pyro av dv external box is too expensive for me….

  i wanna buy snazzi bridge 2 if any one of u confirm that it will work with avid or i will just buy ads pyro pci 64 fire wire port n a fire wire.

  will the quality be good if i just use fire wire with adspyro pci 64 or i have another option

  3. I saw Nvidia geforce 6600 graphics card. its affordable. But avid is recommonding Nvidia quaro fx 500….what effect does it have.

  i can also purchase any of nvidia geforce higher version…do u have any recomondation.

  If i purchase a graphic card with fire wire port can it be used instead of purchasing an extra ads pyro pci 64 card…..can u tell me any affordable graphic card with fire wire port.

  4. If i use firewire card to capture video from my camera, how will the audio be captured….i still cant understand how to connections work…Will the fire wire capture both audio n video….if not how can the audio n video be captured in sync.

  is it better to go for ads pyro av dv external box like this one… the advantage is i can preview on Tv but it costs 200 $ outside n more than 450 $ in india

  Well, there are a lot of questions here!

  First off, how much money do you have to spend?

  How experienced of an editor are you?

  Are you planning on making any money on this venture, or is it for experience?

  As much as I love Avid, it’s just a tool. If you are new to filmmaking, my suggestion is learn how to tell a story. Learn how to pace your edits. Storytelling is not about how many CGI (computer generated effects) you have per second of film (although pretty much any movie these days is quite the opposite!).

  Buying an Avid is an expensive proposition because it’s a professional tool. I would suggest using something basic, and as you build up your skills, you can progress into a toolset that is appropriate.

  Please don’t take this as a slam – video is a very expensive hobby. If you don’t have the income to support your habit, you can find yourself very frustrated!

  If you have the money, I strongly urge you to buy from a reseller (or buy a computer that matches Avid specs). Unless you enjoy hours of frustration, OS twiddling and hair pulling, of course!
