  Analogue video

  Hi, Is there a way I can change the format of an analogue video (ie Hi 8) to an Avid ‘supported’ format?
  Or could I load it via Pinnacle Studio or similar?
  Will the audio automatically follow the video when doing this?

  I’m not sure I follow. If you use Mojo/Adrenaline/Meridian to input your video, there is no problem.

  If you are talking about a digital format (specifically IEE1394), Hi8 doesn’t have firewire outputs (could be wrong though)…

  So, are you trying to get Hi8 into the Avid? If so, what is your setup? If you have one of the three input devices listed above, you simply attach your deck / camera and go to town. If you can only go firewire, then you’ll need a A/D converter. Old versions (3.4) actually came with a third-party A/D converter, which makes the whole process simpler.

  Remember Avid is driven by a Quicktime engine. Whatever program you use needs to use quicktime as well. Using avi will put you in the 2gb OS file limit….

  Thanks Jon,
  I have been inputting from the Hi8 with the S video connector via a TV tuner
  card into a ‘file’ on the HD and then trying to import to Avid.
  Unfortunately, Avid cannot ‘see’ the mpeg format, so my question really was
  asking what I need to convert to a format that Avid does support.
  An option I suppose, is to use a dvd recorder between the camera and computer
  (except my dvd is downstairs and the computer upstairs!)
  Could I put the pictures I have onto a dvd and then into Avid?? -sorry if I’m
  droning on…

  What Avid are you on? XPress DV? Xpress Pro? Do you have Mojo? Give us some specs and we’ll keep working on a solution. I’ve brought Hi8 in my Avid Xpress Meridien by lining the Video Out from the camera (aka Composite Out) into the Composite In of my breakout box, then ran the audio through my mixer. I couldn’t get deck control or timecode with it, but it imported just fine. Looked like ass, but it was Hi8. Served its purpose perfectly (undercover footage for a news story).
