  logo import problem in AE

  I am trying to take an illustrator file and import it into AE CS3 to use it in invigorator, but when i tell it to open a illustrator file choose it to open it open the files but there are no layers to adjust. it just imports as a blob. i have checked out the illustrator file and it is the same as another one that works. i have also saved it out every possible version of illustrator and nothing seems to work. i could only make one work and two that did not. when i tell it to dismantle incoming groups it does not even show up. what am i doing wrong?
