  • Doing rain and keying wet skin (potential postproduction nightmare)

I need to do some, well – fake, rain for a video.
    Alright this is the setup:
1: Background’s going to be of the band standing in actual rain.
2: In front of this there’s a girl passing (this is going to be done in front of bluescreen) no rain on her.
3: Composited in front of her a keyed shot of the singer.

The thing is I want rain on the singer as well, but since keying rain can only be impossible (I imagine, lots of strange spill, and lots reflections etc), so my idea would be doing some kind of particlesystem, that looks like rain in front of him (and maybe behind him). I would also like to place a hose in his hair to further the effect of the rain. (he’s going to be facing the camera, btw)
We’ll be shooting 500D 16mm, if this helps anyone, and it’s going to be scanned at SD. Photographer and lighting insures me that that the blue screen shots will be fine – but since I don’t want to spend several days in rotoscoping hell trying to remove strange reflections from the rain on his skin: Will this work? I’ve never tried keying wet subjects before, so a little uneasy with this one as well 🙂
Has anyone tried this kind of setup? Any reccomendations on how to do the rain – I’ve been thinking Trapcode’s Particular? Also any general imput will be greatly apreciated!

    Thanks a lot in advance!

You should just get a plugin that simulates rain fall. Final Effects has one. Use that as the start, then tweak it with other effects. Keying rain will not work.

After Effects comes with an effect called CC Rain.

My Machine is rendering, so I can;t look at the exact path from the effects menu, but if you go into your effects and presets window (usually next to the time controls window) and type in CC Rain, it will bring it up.

FYI – The effect only comes with Non-educational versions of AE Professional, and it’s a seperate installer on the AE CD.
