I just got a JVC Pro HD Camera. I’m recording to a SanDisk and I’m editing on Final Cut 7. Which format should I record in – QT or MP4? I’ve tried both – I can “log and transfer” the MP4 files, but not the QT files into Final Cut. However, I am able to import the QT files straight into Final Cut. What is the difference between “log and transfer” and importing files?

I tend to shoot in QT mode when I know that my takes will not exceed the 4GB file size limit and split the file. When shooting longer format I shoot in mp4. At this point it is just a wrapper. Either way you are using the XDCAM codec.

With the JVC software you can really stitch together multiple MP4 files and even files that span multiple cards into one long file (ie. you are doing a multiclip).

The QT wrapped files import right into the “capture bin” w/o any need of log and transfer.

Hope this helps and would love to hear others opinions.
