dubbing for backup from HD100
An associate of mine is shooting a travel documentary in central america, and would like to make backup copies of his tapes and mail them back to the US every week or so while he’s down there.
We’re considering buying the Sony GV-HD700 deck for duplicating tapes in lieu of buying the more expensive, less portable decks. Does anyone have any experience with HDV decks/dubbing? Does dubbing between HDV devices involve re-compression? Will the deck also transfer timecode information or will it record its own?

One of the first questions is how are you planning on handling your workflow.
If you are using the HD100 as a playback device and dubbing out via firewire…you could probably use any deck you like.
One issue to really be aware of is that the JVC HDV stream is proprietary and you cannot playback an HDV JVC tape in any other device excepting JVC HDV decks or cameras.
Why not look at one of the hard drive systems…it would be cheaper and probably safer in shipping. Then at end of shoot…you have your tape and the hard drive and keep the one you want to keep and ship the other.
Just some thoughts.
