While Technically not AE…
Tonight, I went an watched “Legion.” During the movie, there were 7 times (yes, I counted after I saw the second one) 4 dots on the screen during a visual effect. These white (off-white)dots are 2 x 2 in a square.
They appeared either before an effect or as (for example) an explosion occurred.
The Orphanage, Inc. was the visual effects group.
Can anyone explain these? I have an idea that these are markers placed during production of the effect or a marker for an effect.

My guess is that your guess is right on the money. Although I haven’t seen Legion, the tracking marks would make a lot of sense. I have used them on blank TV screens in a grid (I just used green sticky dots you buy at Staples) to facilitate using Combustion’s motion tracker to add video to the screen in post-production.
You would think someone would have caught that during post, but it’s also possible that they did, and figured no one would catch it during realtime playback. My guess is that you were frame-by-framing it to check out the effects. Good catch!
