  • Dynamic Link/PP HDV Capture into AE

Surely Adobe didn’t make something this worthless and I am doing something wrong??
I am capturing HDV video 1080/60i or 1080/30p (doesn’t matter) in Premiere. Only option allows me to capture as .mpeg. Then I go to “replace with After Effects composition” and of course AE can’t open my .mpeg. WTF? Is this a known issue? If so why does Adobe bother capturing in a format that you can’t dynamically link to AE in?

HDV footage is compressed with the MPEG-2 compression scheme. That’s why it’s being captured as such.

    Dave’s Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following —
    footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, mp4, m2t, H.261 or
H.264 — you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They
have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame
information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete
information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete
information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage
contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide
    variety of problems.

Once you have your footage in Premiere edit it and then export what you want as a different kind of footage. Quicktime using the PNG codec is quite popular (NOT a PNG sequence).
Or you can encode your entire clip into your preferred format and edit it Premiere then do the dynamic link. To be honest, I’ve never found dynamic linking to work terribly well. I just import Premiere projects into AE and everything is awesome.
