  Hot Mic Audio but not Exactly Clipped on the Waveform

  I accidentally left my wireless mic driving too hot during a surgical procedure where I could not get at the surgeon during the case to adjust it back down. The audio sounds clipped, distorted, that fuzzy sound, but the waveform is not crashing up to the top of the waveform timeline track, and is not flat up top. But I guess the term is still “clipped” or “distorted.”

  When I take it into SoundTrack Pro version 3.0.1 from Final Cut 7 it does not analyze the clipped audio so doesn’t offer anything if the “fix all” button after analyze, because the waveform is not crashing into the limits. Again I don’t know if one would call this audio “clipped” or “peaked” or “distorted” from the mic.

  So is there any way to fix this kind of audio or is this the same thing as peaked audio? If there is a fix, let me know. I would call the sound of this audio clipped, but not sure. Thanks!

  Hello Greg and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

  Sounds like maybe you crushed the transmitter input but not the received audio. So you’d get a lower height waveform, but it may still be clipped. I’d have to have a clip to look at and listen to, but that’s what your explanation sounds like to me.

  There are several de-clipper plug ins on the market that MAY improve the sound. iZotope makes Rx.

  Now you know why the pros ALWAYS listen to production audio.

  Indeed that is what happened. I am looking at iZotope. This was a situation where I was running a two camera shoot all by myself because my cameraman threw his back out, and all that transpired into this kind of vagueness about certain things. The rest of the shoot went well but that was my big mistake. and because it was a total hip arthroplasty, I couldn’t get to the system in the middle of the case. Thanks for this comment.
