Recommended headphones for video editing.
Hi, I’m a filmmaker. By ignorance and lack of the right information, I do not know what are the best available headphones within my price range for what I need, and I’m sure there are a great deal of audio professionals out the in the media industry, as well as audiophiles with a back ground in media editing, who would know alot more about what I need, than sadly me 🙁
As stated, I’m a filmmaker, who needs suitable headphones to get me through the media editing, sound mix, and if need be, the compositional/scoring of the films, but primarily and most importantly the editing of the pictures, location audio, and dialogue of the films.
What I’m basically trying to say, but in a very confusing way (I’m sorry 🙁 ) is that I need headphones which will help him to edit my films, specialising more on the editing of the media (picture, location sound, dialogue), but if possible, are fairly descent for scoring of films, if I need be. But if I had to make a choice, definitely priority number one is for the purposes of editing the films.
I have a price range of $200-250 Aus (About $220- 200 US) to buy these headphones.
Any help or suggestions on headphones, which you think would suit what I need and are within my price range, would be very appreciated. Like I said, but in a confusing way ( I’m sorry again) looking primarily for video editing headphones to edit my films.

There are no headphones just for editing. You should be monitoring on speakers. That said the Sony 7506 phones have long been the defacto standard, about $100usd.

Monitoring on speakers, ok. All I’ve got at my disposal is the computers inbuilt speakers. I’m sure that’s not adequate enough, but sadly that’s all I can afford right now 🙁
I’ll definitely check up on the sony headphones you identified.

Is there anywhere near you where you can try headphones on ?
In my opinion if you’re going to wear headphones for long periods having a good comfortable fit is as important as the sound quality. E.g., the place where I’m working at the moment has Shure SRH840 headphones which I like for sound quality but I find them rather uncomfortable so I taking my Sony’s in.
I also like Audio Technica ATH-M50 and Sennheiser HD480 but I usually have to raid my daughter (media student & musician) to get those back.
TBH, if you can, I’d suggest checking a few reviews, e.g., https://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan10/articles/studioheadphones.htm
and make a shortlist of the three or four that you think would suit you and then find somewhere to try them on. -
I agree with the 7506 recommendation. Low cost, great all around quality. Since you seem to be focused on using them primarily for video editing, you really just need two things IMO
1) hear sound
2) be comfortable
Now, the 7506’s are pretty much all I know, we haven’t been without two or more pairs almost as long as I can remember and they are no-brainier purchase. Also check out the newer MDR 7510 model though. Larger 50mm driver units, wider frequency response, double the power handling, durable non-folding design, similar price. Seems like a generally positive reception to these, but read some reviews to see what you think.

I tend to get sweaty in the 7506’s. Especially if you aren’t specifically needing to block out other room noise, I’d bet there’s something even better suited to comfortably wearing for hours on end. As Andrew said, it’d be a good idea to go try some on for yourself.
