    Hello Everyone!

I will be recording for a video shoot at a gun range. I have never recording guns before and was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions as to what microphone I might use. I usually use my Sanken CS3e for shoots but I don’t think that the spl can handle this kind of work. The gun range is in doors and concrete, and I will be recording everything from hand guns to michine guns. I will be running this into my sound devices 722. Any advice on mic placement would be appreciated as well Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Dynamic mics can usually handle higher SPL than condensers. I’d also think about having a second mic somewhat removed to add a bit of room sound, close-micing a gunshot to an extremely “dry” sound can be less than satisfying.

Also, record two channels, one several DB down.

And maybe one of the real audio guys can help. I’m a camera/lighting guy really, with an interest in sound mostly from a documentary angle.

Hello Dana and welcome tot eh Cow Audio Forum.

Many people will suggest a Dynamic mic like the Sennheiser 421. That’ll work. I have also used my Schoeps cmc641 on a variety of German WWII machine guns, rifles and hand guns from a distance of 4-6 feet.
