FPS problems with Camtasia converted to MP4
Hi all.
I hope someone can help me.
I have been working with these camtasia recorded videos alot lately and I have run into a lot of problems relating to the FPS. The videos get sent to me in MP4 files.
Here is the problem:
Quicktime or VLC player reads the video as a certain timelimit and when importing them, AE changes the time, and cuts off the last few seconds, Also the frame rate changes in AE, on the mac it goes to 0.768 and on the pc to something slightly differet, I have tried interpreting the video at the frame rate that VLC player and quicktime say it is, but then its hard to change the frame rate to not let AE cut off any of the file.I recieve the files in MP4 because they are easier to send.

I really need urgent help with this.
Its really irretating that when comparing the FPS from VLC player or QUICKTIME with the frame rate in AE, they are completely different. On the mac, and on the pc.

You should avoid importing MP4s into After Effects, and transcode to another format before importing to After Effects. Search this forum for “Dave’s Stock Answer #1” and read any of the results written by Dave LaRonde for more information.

See the second half of this post, from just a couple threads before this one.
Basically, open up the footage in something that can handle it, like Quicktime Player or MPEG Streamclip, and export it as something else that doesn’t rely on interframe compression. You might use Quicktime with the Animation codec, PhotoJPEG codec, Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHD, DVCPRO HD, or an image sequence (TIFF or TGA). Use the exported file in AE.

I work a lot with Camtasia footage for training videos etc. I always use the .AVI native format as I’ve had lots of problems with transcoding to other formats in the past – transcoding to Microsoft WMV using the screen codec is another option but I have had colour issues when doing this before.
I know you said MP4’s were chosen for portability but I really would stick to AVI and the techsmith codec if at all possible.
