  patchbay

  I have an old, discontinued Tascam balanced, TRS patchbay, and need more patchpoints.

  While looking for an additional patchbay I found out that mine was considered “prosumer.” I have never noticed a problem, but then again I’m a shooter/editor, and not an audio specialist.

  Is this a difference that makes a difference? I’m not making features or Dolby surround-sound masterpieces, just documentaries and corporate pieces.

  What is a reasonable price for a “professional” audio patchbay, and what characteristics should I be looking for?

  I’m in the camp that says,

  “Jacks are jacks.”

  A “PRO” panel may be more rugged in the long-term, but if a unit (especially a
  “passive” unit) is working, I don’t sweat the label.

  So all that stuff about “military spec” audio patchbays, at 4x the cost of plain old patchbays — you’re not believing there is a difference?

  I guess the test would be to introduce the patchbay into the middle of the cable route and see whether it makes an audible difference?
