Hi, a CC email caught my eye the other day about the Matrox MXO2.
I’m fairly learned with AE, but can’t really work out if this is appropriate for AE, or if it’s just to preview from Final Cut / editors.

    I’d love to know, thankyou!

No idea what you’re talking about but hardware acceleration for AE is almost always proprietary; the hardware only works with a specific codec and limited supply of redundant or useless filters for that specific codec.
Harken back to the days of Blue Ice and some other doodad that had “cine” in the name. All expensive, full of holes, and long dead.
Let us know if you buy one.

The Matrox MXO2 is a video IO device — it will let you preview your AE work on a broadcast monitor. You can also use a DV deck connected with Firewire, or another capture card like an AJA Kona or BMD Decklink, by using the Video Preview feature.

It will not affect your render time at all.
