    I have tried converting it to .avi, reinstalling quicktime and finding a different file, but nothing is working.

    As for it being to do with the file size, the problem was with much smaller files too.

    A very unhelpful error message is given upon putting the file in. (Just the generic “File ____ could not be opened”

    Is your 1080 file and your 720 file the exact same thing ?

    You have to remember that an MP4 is just a container, just like a box. What’s inside can be different from one file to the other .
