  • Veg File – Not Found – Can’t Load

Posted by Jay Mitchell on February 15, 2019 at 2:00 am

Vegas Pro 15 crashed while I was working in a veg file.
    Vegas – Not responding.
    Tried Saving and closing PC.
    Had to Force Shutdown.

After restarting PC, Tried opening veg file.
First notice was that something in Vegasaur was corrupted. – I hit OK.
Then, My previously saved copy of the veg file would not open.

Message says “An error occurred while loading the veg file. – The item was not found”

Can anything be done to restore this – so that I can open the file?

Free Starbucks Coffee for anyone who can get it back loaded.

    It’s a week’s worth of work with a deadline of Friday…

Look for a back up file in the same directory your .veg was saved. The file will have a tail of .veg.bak ..
To see the backup files when you “open” a .veg, select ALL FILES *.* in the pulldown list for file types.

The Backup file is automatically created by Vegas when you “save” a .veg file. Each save overwrites the previous backup, so only the last save gets backed up. I think that’s right.

For the Record from Vegas Help:

    Automatic project saving
A backup copy of your project is automatically saved every five minutes. If your system crashes, you will be prompted to open the backup file the next time you start the application.
Backup files are saved in the location specified in the Temporary files folder box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog. Files are saved with the .autosave.veg extension and are deleted when you exit the application. For more information, see Preferences – General Tab
If you prefer not to autosave your project, you can clear the Enable autosave check box on box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog.

When you save a project, .veg.bak files are created in your project folder to allow you to return to the project’s last-saved state. Creation of backup files is independent of automatic project saving.

I enabled hidden files and folders and found the last autosave veg file that was dated 24 hours previously.
    My Path: C:\Users\Jay\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\15.0\

There are no veg files .bak or otherwise from today’s date.
The veg file autosave from yesterdays date – opened.

I save my work by pressing “save” after each editing function that I perform. It’s just a habit.

Are the “manual saves” that I do, stored separately somewhere from the autosaves?

I am grateful to have a starting point of yesterdays work. But, really need all of the editing added today.

Paul, Just like you said, I found the last “manual saved” veg file bak in the project folder.
It is stamped, just minutes before the crash. I changed the suffice to just .veg and it would not load.

The message when loading still displays:

An error occurred while loading the project file ___ veg
    The item was not found

Probably will not help — but here are some things to try (why not?) …

1 .. reboot your system (get a clean start) ..

    2. .. rename the backup file as it was .veg.bak .. try to open that.

3… if file still corrupted, I’m out of ideas unless you know how to debug the corrupted file header and see if the corruption can be fixed ? Debugging takes an expert and the right software.

    4. Most of us have been bitten too .. sometimes the fastest way is to rebuild it. You’ll find 2nd time around the edit will go faster.

    Hi Jay,

Obviously this doesn’t help for your issue today…..

In addition to ‘Save’, when I have made any changes to the program that I don’t want to spend hours recreating, I do incremental changes, so all my projects start with something like ‘Downtown Nightlife-001.veg’, then ‘Downtown Nightlife-002.veg’ and so on. It has saved me many times.

    Best Regards……George

Hi George – Yes I see the value in incremental “save as’s”. Will be doing that going forward.

The burning question I have is about the autosaves. It says that it saves every 5 minutes. But, yet, the latest one found in the appdata folder was nearly 24 hours old. I had worked on the project at least 10 more hours then the last autosave stamped time.

Hmmmmmmmmm … I tired to duplicate that problem .. and I did. I started a new project in VP15 .. saved the project .. made some edits .. saved the project again … waited 5 min .. Then I tried to find the Autosave file in C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\15.0 … I did not find it.

Strange. You have used something like Quantum entanglement to knock out my autosave. It always worked before. What ever version and when ever I’ve needed the autosave file (after a crash generally) the file has always been there .. Does autosave only work during a crash?

I looked in my VP13 folder and there was only one autosave files there named: 00000000.restored.veg ..

Hmmmm … something is up here. Anyone else understand what goes on?

Tried the same thing in VP13 .. after 5 min, I found an autosave file in the right place .. C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas Pro\13.0 .. it was named: 000011cc.autosave.veg …

But cannnot duplicate in VP15. My general preferences have “enable autosave” checked.
