  • First post – difficulty with frame rate when rendering

Posted by Paul Stephens on August 31, 2018 at 8:12 pm

Hi all, it’s my first attempt at making a proper video using Vegas 14.0, and I’m having problems with rendering a video which is made up of various 2-3 second clips. Some of the clips in the finished video suffer from a “ghosting” as per the picture below:

    capture.jpg

    The project settings are here:

The video settings for the source file are:

    General
    Name: 20180804_100309.mp4
    Folder: C:\_Video\Phone1
    Type: AVC
    Size: 124.60 MB (127,592,399 bytes)

    Attributes: Archive

    Streams
    Video: 00:00:59.004, 30.015 fps progressive, 1920x1080x12, AVC
Audio: 00:00:59.008, 48,000 Hz, Stereo, AAC

    ACID chunk: no
    Stretch chunk: no
    Stretch list: no
    Stretch info2: no
    Beat markers: no
    Detected beats: no

    Other metadata
    Regions/markers: no
    Command markers: no

    Media manager
    Media tags: no

    Plug-In
    Name: compoundplug.dll
    Folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 14.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\compoundplug
    Format: AVC
    Version: Version 14.0 (Build 244) 64-bit
Company: MAGIX Computer Products Intl. Co.

However, the frame rate on the source files do vary a little, from 29.99 to 30.015 FPS.

What can I do to prevent this double imaging in the finished video? I have source files from two other cameras, which are also of slightly different frame rates, which I will also need to eventually add to the project.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it’s for a friend’s birthday in a month’s time. Thank you.

    Hi Paul,

Your source media is progressive, so change the Project Properties ‘Field order:’ from ‘Upper field first’, to ‘None (Progressive scan)’. Also in Project Properties at the bottom change ‘Resample mode:’ from ‘Smart resample’ to ‘Disble resample’. Then match your render settings to your project setting and see how that looks.

You, Sir, are an absolute life saver. Thank you, that worked like a charm.
I do have to splice in footage from the other two cameras so I’ll save those settings and see how they go.

    Hi Paul

Just to add to George’s response, you may experience some problems down the road with your file. Possibly at the rendering stage, because of your frame rate.

if that’s the case, use HandBrake to convert your file to a more friendly and stable format. Remember to always keep your original file intact in case something goes wrong along the way.

I’m glad that has worked out for you Paul so far. As Francois posted Handbrake can save you from problem in Vegas caused by veriable frame rate source media, if Vegas has a problem with it. Some VFR source media causes Vegas to do strange things and other VFR source seems to process well.

In my experience if Vegas handles viewing and editing the VFR source it will render without problems. With that said, I very seldom process VFR source media. If it does then using Handbrake to convert the source before putting into Vegas will help. If you have any problems rendering, I would suggest to Frame-Serve directly out of Vegas into Handbrake for the render. Here is an excellent How-To:
