  • Is There a Center Cut Overlay?

Posted by Norm Kaiser on April 12, 2018 at 8:43 pm

    Hello all:

The bane of my existence is shooting 16:9 HD video that’s safe for center cutting.

Is there a center cut overlay in Vegas that will show me the safe zones for center cut video and graphics?

In other words, I want to start a 16:9 project, turn on the 4:3 center cut overlay, and then ensure all my graphics are with the title safe.

The default overlay in Vegas is not for center cutting, correct?

    Thanks, everyone!

    Norm

Norm? I understood everything up till that? I’m almost sure we can change the Overlay in Preferences. But failing that, you could Roll yer Own by making a 4:3 yourself, plop it on the uppermost Track. You must ensure you remove it prior to Render ????

    Here’s my RMO :

And here WITH the 16×9 VegasPro overlays:

Now, I’m sure you could make many improvements to mine: Better Dots; have these overlays as PART of your Custom Made VEG; Make them a NEST and so on and so forth. But yes, we’ve all been banging on about this since at least 2002 when I joined-up to VP. My other bugbear is why don’t we have Overlays revealed on the external Monitor too? They’ve ALWAYS been there in DVDA? Go figure . . . .

That’s EXACTLY what I’m looking for! How, specifically, did you do it? The dotted lines are a transparent .PNG?

[Norm Kaiser] “That’s EXACTLY what I’m looking for! “

    Yeah, thought it was????

[Norm Kaiser] “How, specifically, did you do it?”

In my graphic editor I made a 4:3 graphic rectangle with a dotted line border.

[Norm Kaiser] “The dotted lines are a transparent .PNG?”

No, the Dots are sitting on a Transparent PNG.

And you resized it on the timeline to what percentage?

[Norm Kaiser] “And you resized it on the timeline to what percentage?”

I did the maths in the Graphic Editor for the 4:3 for the HD plate. I didn’t bother doing the maths for the safe area %. I just used the manual crop and adjusted to nearly match. I’m sure you could make it closer.
