    I know that I can change the properties and deselect, “loop” and “maintain aspect ratios” and sometimes that will eliminate the black borders when zooming – depending on the size and dimensions of the clip.

    Of course, that does not always work depending on the size and dimension. So in those cases, is there a way to have the black borders not appear as the clip zooms?

    try this.
    use Pan/Crop > Make Output Aspect
