Hello all. I just got Vegas Pro 11 (64-bit) and it’s my first time working with any version of Vegas, so I’m still pretty green, so I hope this isn’t a stupid question.

I just rendered my first video last night, and considering all the settings, my systems specs, and the length of the video, I think the render time was much longer than it should have been; it took over and hour to render a 17-minute video. Granted it was in HD, but I would still have expected it to go a little quicker. Aside from basic cutting, the only editing I did was add a couple of very simple text overlays, so it doesn’t seem like it should have been a very intensive rendering process. My project settings and system specs are listed below.

Any help would be much appreciated. I am really hoping this is just a case of my not tweaking the right setting or leaving a certain box unchecked. It would be awesome to be able to render more quickly. Oh, and I forgot to mention that my source footage is video game capture from FRAPS, and I am rendering this for upload to YouTube, if that helps.

    Rendering settings:

For comparison I have a quad core athelon running at 2.8 ghz. It take 5 hours to render an hour and 45 minute 720p video. That’s why I built an I7 2600 desktop and it renders the same video in just under 2 hours.

That sounds about right. I assume that the FRAPS video was not captured at 1280×720 so Vegas has to resize 30 pictures for every 1 second of video. That takes a lot of time. I also see that you have used a Render Quality of “Best”. This will double your render time but it might be needed because you are resizing FRAPS video. If you set it to “Good” your renders will be faster but they might not look as good. Toggle it off and see what you think. It might look the same with Best in which case you an cut your render times in half by changing this setting.

I actually did capture in 1280×720 though (I used a program called Sizer to resize my game window), so that shouldn’t be a problem. But thanks for the tip about changing the Render Quality. If the only difference between Good and Best would be from resizing (which shouldn’t be necessary), then Good should be acceptable. I’ll be rendering another video tomorrow, so I’ll give an update when it’s done.

Let us know how you make out because Good is the same as Best if you’re not resizing.

Well, I’ve rendered two videos now on Good, with no difference whatsoever in total render time. Perhaps there’s an option somewhere that’s forcing it to resize unnecessarily? I’ve tried to explore all the options I could find, but some of these menus are much more complex than I’m used to, so I could have easily missed it, or seen it and not recognized it as such.

I’m guessing it’s because you are rendering to Windows Media format which is probably not optimized because it’s so old. As I said, 4x for rendering is about the right amount of time. If you have Vegas Pro 11.0 and a good CUDA enabled graphics card, try rendering to MainConcept AVC and see if the times get better (they should).

I have an AMD GPU, so CUDA isn’t an option. Thanks for your help, though. I can accept the 4x render time, I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t doing something horribly wrong and making things harder than necessary. I just recently built this machine and I guess I thought it would render a little quicker. It’s still a vast improvement over my old system, so I certainly can’t complain. Thanks so much again for the help!

[Joseph Hill] “I have an AMD GPU, so CUDA isn’t an option.”

Actually, Vegas Pro will also use Open CL for AMD cards so still make sure that your GPU is being recognized.
