DVD authoring application – use standard DVD media to play back HD video
Hello. I recently read in the book, From Still To Motion, that it is possible to create HD discs cheaply. Apparently, some DVD authoring applications can change the blu-ray project to an AVCHD disc, which lets you use standard DVD media to play back HD video. Thus, one can use cheap DVDs and DVD burners to create discs that have HD content.
Would anyone please advise me on how to do this? I am using Sony Vegas 11 with Vegas DVD architect. If Vegas/Architect cannot do this, does anyone have a combination/solution that would work?

A fresh update in Sony Creative Software Knowledgebase states that Burning to DVD / High Definition is Not Supported in Vegas Pro 11 as “it does not meet industry standards”.
You could try Tools / Burn Disc / Blu-ray Disc > Render image and burn (Burn Drive: DVD-burner) to see what happens though (and use a rewritable disc when you test).
It may not work in all BD players or in all versions of PS3 though. -
Look at this thread on the Sony Vegas forum. You certainly can burn HD content on DVD-5 and DVD-9 media.

How cheap are we talking about here? Because 3 years ago when Blu-ray media costs $25 and burners were $600 this may have been attractive, but Blu-ray media costs $1 and burners are $99. Are you really saving that much money by using a $0.30 DVD instead?

The part they left out is that this is not part of the Blu-ray spec and so it’s not “officially” supported. This disc you create is not guaranteed to play on any Blu-ray player and so it is “hit-and-miss” on whether it will work or not. (for example, they don’t play on my Samsung Blu-ray player for more than a few minutes before they skip, stutter, and stop.) This is definitely not a medium to be giving out to people because chances are it might not work on their Blu-ray players. So again… how much do you save by doing this?

In Vegas Pro select Tools | Burn Disc | Blu-ray Disc…. Pop in a DVD and press OK.
