After much googling (is that even a word) I have finally found out that my SD camcorder is recording video with the following properties:

    NTSC
    SAR 1.5 (720×480)
    PAR 1.185 (32:27)
    DAR 1.78 (16:9)

This information is from taking my Canon MOD & MOI files and converting them using SDCopy (to apply the MOI flags to the MOD file and rename it to mpeg)

I then used Gspot to determine the video properties.

My question is, when using this media in Sony Vegas Pro, what project settings should I use. My initial thought was NTSC DV Widescreen, but the PAR is 1.21 and it stretches the video slightly.

Is it possible to build a custom template and assign the PAR to 1.185? Should I just use square pixels and have theblack bars at the top and bottom?

That would have been by suggestion but your camera seems to shoot a non-standard format which is going to be a problem for delivery.

Yes it is possible but the bigger question is, how will you deliver this footage? If it’s Internet or PC only then I guess it’s OK. If you plan to watch it on a TV, there is no TV that will play that PAR without stretching it. You might want to sell that camera and get something that uses industry standards.

You can use the Match Media Settings button in the Project Properties to quickly create a project template that conforms to your source media:

Thanks for the quick response John. It is only family home video so I will be just burning it to DVD for our families enjoyment. I know Vegas is a bit of overkill for amateur home video, but why not have some fun and make a video we will actually watch and not just archive like the 100 or so VHS tapes I have from the old 8mm camcorder.
