  • How (easily) lengthen a still image on the timeline?

Posted by Peter Alvin on December 21, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I have a slide show video with transitions between still images. How do I easily length these, say a few seconds each?

    I actually need both techniques:
    A) for a single image
    B) for all images on timeline (if that is possible in a “bulk” way)

Currently, I have to drag the succeeding image to the right to “un-transition it,” then I drag the right-hand side of the image to the right to length it, THEN, re-drag the succeeding image to the left to overlap for 1 second to re-create the transition. This is a very intensive/costly way to edit 100 images–there has to be a better way!

(I know how to set the default length for adding new images (preferences dialog box) but not once they are already there.)

For a single image, try this.
Create a new track directly above the one with your images.
    Enable Auto Ripple.
Move the desired image up to the new track by clicking it and pressing the 8 key on the numeric keypad.
Stretch it out to the desired length.
Move it back down to the picture track by pressing the 2 key on the numeric keypad.

For multiple images, here’s two approaches.
Change the default length in Prefs and import the images again.
If that’s not an option (because they’re not in order in the media tab), try this method.
Click the first image in the sequence.
Shift+click the last one to select all of them.
Press the G key to Group them all together.
Place the cursor at the end of the last image in the sequence and hold down the Ctrl key.
You should see a ~ symbol under the cursor rectangle.
While holding down the Ctrl key, drag the sequence out to the new desired length.
Be advised that the transition time will increase when you do this.
If you want to ungroup the images after this is done, repeat the selection process described above but press the U key this time to Ungroup them.
