Dvd Player Compatability
I have a problem playing DVD’s created using Architect (ver 4.5c). The DVD starts to play and works just fine for about 5 minutes then square artifacts are displayed and finally the DVD stops or plays very slowly.
Okay, you would probably say that my DVD player/recorder is faulty. However, the player plays all the commercial DVD’s that I throw at it without fault.
The DVD’s created with Architect that fail on the player, work just fine on a number of PC’s.
Can anyone suggest how I can isolate the problem.

What brand of media are you using? Are these dual layer DVD’s? They are a lot harder to read.
Simplest thing to do is try other brands of media. -
How old is your DVD player? The older DVD players (say over3-4 years old had much more difficulty with recordable DVDs. And the cost of the unit was not particularly a factor.

Thanks for your comment about dual-layer DVD’s. No, I’m not using dual-layer disks, just plain DVD’s. I have used two different brands with the same result.
Think I’ll take the DVD’s to a sales outlet and try them in a couple of brands of new players.

The DVD recorder/player is about 3 years old, so maybe your theory is correct.
What I cannot understand is why all the commercial DVD titles that we own and hire, play just fine – why don’t these also fail.
I’m off to the local store and will try out my Sony created DVD in a new player.

Burned DVDs and commercial DVDs are two different birds. They are totally different. Commercial DVDs aere pressed, kind of like grooves in an old phonograph record. They are definately more hardy and if not damaged totally compatable with all DVD players. Recordable DVDs are based on a lazer changing the properties of a dye layer. Much less robust and dependable but still kind of amazing. Media makes a big difference. Try to stick with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatum. There also reportedly was a problem with compatability with the dual deck players burners. The ones that had both a DVD burner/player and a VHS deck in the same unit.
