Vegas Pro or Vegas Movie Studio for a greenhorn
I’m a new video shooter with about fifteen days worth of free trial left on my downloaded copy of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. The only thing that prevents me from buying it is that I think I just might be better off buying Vegas Pro over the long term. I’d like to hear from more experienced users before deciding.
Movie Premiere seems to do everything I need it to do. I’ve seen the comparison list at:

and, for now, can live without the additional features of Vegas Pro.
The two reasons I think I just might be better off with Vegas Pro anyway are:
- I’m almost certain to continue shooting video in the years ahead, and to produce work that’s more demanding than what I’m capable of now. If I standardize on Movie Studio, I’m standardizing on something I’ll probably have to dump eventually. If I’m sure I’m going to keep shooting video, I might as well standardize on Vegas Pro from the start.
- Online help and training are much more available for Vegas Pro than for Movie Studio. Creative Cow has two forums for Vegas Pro users, and there are other Vegas forums available on the Internet. If I get stuck in Pro, I probably can find help. If I get stuck in Premiere, I’m much likelier to be on my own.
If you think that this is a question that only I can answer, please feel free to tell me so. But if you have an opinion, I’d like to hear it.
Additional information: I’m now using a Sony SR11 to produce event videos for the Internet exclusively. I’m likelier to buy a more sophisticated camcorder when my knowledge and video work justify the expense.
My 1.86ghz dual core processor computer loads Movie Premiere quickly. Rendering times with the SR11 AVCDH files are acceptable. If Vegas Pro would render more slowly, that would be an argument for sticking with Movie Premiere.

I don’t know what you intend on editing or what your finished products will contain, but I will say this: the pro version allows for scripting. If you are unfamiliar with this, look it up. Look up UltimateS pro by Vasst. Look up Excalibur by JetDV. Look up Deshaker (for shaky video) and be aware that there are countless free scripts out there for Vegas and see if those things would be beneficial for you. They can speed up your workflow tremendously and make your videos look a whole lot more professional and they are only available in Vegas Pro.
