  Does anyone know if an upconverting dvd player will enhance the picture quality of a vegas created sd dvd when shown on an hdtv?

  It really depends on the player, the TV and how you edited and encoded your footage. There are a lot of factors in there. Some Hollywood DVDs I have don’t look as good on my HDTV with an upconverting player while others look decent- but nothing compared to BluRay.
