  • Convert HD from FAT 32 to NTFS?

Posted by Steve Littler on August 14, 2008 at 11:50 pm

I just found out that my main HD is formatted as FAT 32, not NTFS, and this is limiting the file sizes for my output movies.

Is there a safe simple way to convert it to NTFS without reformatiing destructively and wiping everything clean?

    (Windows XP PRO, SP2)

    Many thanks!

I’m not sure, but why not do that later- just buy another hard drive (cheap on http://www.dealnews.com) and format that to NTSF if it isn’t already and use it. Once you are done with the project you are working on, take everything off that hard drive that you wish to keep and then do the conversion and see if the other things are still there afterwards.

Yes, I think that is what I will do. I can save all my documents on another drive.

Terry had suggested https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/208/873543 a conversion possibility. But I wonder if that really works and what would happen to all my programs and fonts?

(If it doesn’t work, the idea of reinstalling the OS, Programs, and Fonts etc. is daunting.)

    Steve,

Windows XP includes the Convert.exe utility for converting a FAT partition to an NTFS partition. Here is the article How to Use Convert.exe to Convert a Partition to the NTFS File System from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/EN-US/

I know several people who have done the conversion with no problems.

Actually, convert FAT32 to NTFS is much simply than the conversion from NTFS to FAT32.
So, you can get more useful solution about your question and information from the following link:
    https://www.extend-partition.com/resource/convert-fat32-to-ntfs-filesystem.html
Then, by the way, share another piece of information about convert NTFS to FAT32 without data losing with you, and I think maybe you will need this when you find the file system–NTFS can not fit you (can not recognize or some other reasons).
